piano recital reminder

just a reminder that randy has his piano recital tomorrow, november 1st, at 5:30 pm in the madsen recital hall on byu campus. we would love to see you there!

happy halloween!

my mom and my mother-in-law have a lot of things in common, but a love for halloween is not one of them.

growing up in my house, halloween was a four-letter word. my mom hated it. she actually had several good reasons for hating it. what other holiday parades large, black spiders as decorations? in washington, it almost always rained on halloween, making trick-or-treating a little miserable (umbrellas and coats can often ruin a costume). it really is the only holiday that i can think of where people become destructive. and the stress of coming up with an idea for and constructing a good costume can be overwhelming. as an adult with independent reasoning, i completely agree with my mother.

so, needless to say, halloween was anything but conventional growing up, as my mom did her best to minimize such a gross holiday. we still went trick-or-treating (with my dad as chaperon whenever possible), but it was certainly limited to our own neighborhood. none of this driving to several neighborhoods to rack up on candy. and once we were 12, trick-or-treating was over.* i won't say that my mom was completely unwilling to help us come up with a costume once we had any kind of ability to create one on our own (3 years old?), but maybe i will hint at it. don't worry mom, i actually think this fostered some great creativity, even if that wasn't your intention.

as we got older (unfortunately, after i had passed 12), my mom came with some even better ways to avoid halloween traditions. my mom promised my younger siblings that if they would forgo trick-or-treating, she would take them to the grocery store, give them a generous budget to buy the good candy that they wanted (no longer victims to tootsie rolls and dum dums) and rent any movie of their choice. and once we had the lakehouse? goodbye neighborhood with kids coming around begging for candy, hello secluded lake where we could escape and hunker down for a beautiful fall evening, devoid of ghoulishness.

if any of this sounds critical of my mother, i want you to know that it is not intended that way at all. i much preferred it this way and will probably continue several of these traditions.

jeanie, on the other hand, ADORES halloween. i started dating randy in october and still remember the witch refrigerator magnet that his mother had made for him hanging on his fridge. she loves not only making (we're talking hours of sewing) costumes for herself to dress up in, but also volunteers to help other people. let's just say randy grew up in a different halloween environment than i did.

so which side won out this halloween? linford or peck? a little of both. as you can tell from the picture, madeleine is wearing a t-shirt with bats on it for halloween, purchased by her grammy (score one for peck), and we do have a pumpkin on our porch, which my sister-in-law, kim, got for madeleine (score two for peck). but i refused to spend money on a costume for a 10-month old who would probably only be annoyed by it and want it off within the first two minutes (score one linford), and we certainly will not be traipsing around our sketchy neighborhood to go trick-or-treating (score two linford). in fact, we are not even going to be home to greet trick-or-treaters because we will be escaping up to my aunt and uncle's house for a family party, which i will only acknowledge as a celebration of my grandfather's birthday (score three linford).

in the end, the halloween hating linford side probably edged out a small victory. but don't worry madeleine, the tables may turn as you get older. but don't count on it.

*except for the yearly visit to our strange neighbors who worked for hershey's to accept a large bag of hershey's miniatures - later explained by them to be some kind of consideration for a social contract that ensured that we would not go on their lawn or use sidewalk chalk in front of their house. this was explained while we were engaging in said activities

ward halloween party

we had our ward halloween party last night and had a good time, despite the holiday. randy had a performance he had to attend, so madeleine and i went without him. because he wasn't there, i decided to go as a single mom without the time, energy, or money to buy my kid a costume. i didn't take any pictures because we looked just like we normally do. don't you love easy (lazy) halloween costumes? i did wear sweatpants and i'll let you judge whether or not those were part of the costume (they were, i actually changed into them).

best costumes of the night go to our friends, the bushmans. adam dressed up like bob ross and rachael dressed up as a happy little tree. it was great and i was proud that i got it right off the bat. they always have promising costumes. last year, rachael was a large wedge of cheese (imagine the green bay packers) and adam dressed up like the guy from the mac commercials ("i'm a mac, and i'm a p.c."). they were mac and cheese. so creative.

lunch at the moa

last friday, my mom came down to provo with audrey and the boys and we all met up for lunch at the museum of art cafe. soooo good and so much fun to be with my family. madeleine was too enamored with ray and matthew to look at the camera. it seems the feeling was mutual for matthew.

under the weather

my little girl's been feeling a little feverish for the past couple days, so we've been taking it easy. she's finally coming out of it today and it's good to see my happy, active madeleine again.

five guys burgers

if your family hasn't been ranting and raving about five guys burgers and fries lately, then you are obviously not a member of my family. they recently opened a five guys burgers in sandy and my dad absolutely loves it. randy had a music teacher's conference right by five guys today, so we went and had lunch there to try it out. my dad was right. it was great.

the burger i got was one of the best burgers i've had (mom, you're right, king charley's still takes the cake), especially for a fast food joint. and the fries were probably the second best fries i've had (once again, i think king charley's wins out, but it may be a bit unfair, seeing as their fries are laced with nostalgia). randy says they're the best he's ever had. we'll definitely be returning.

my only complaint? the music was too loud. i'm such an old lady.

the poisonwood bible

i just finished reading "the poisonwood bible," by barbara kingsolver. it took me a few days longer to read this than "rules," however, it was only because it is a much longer book, not because i was not completely engrossed in the book. i was. and unlike "rules," i probably did neglect a lot more of my duties to read this one. i'm sure that madeleine will be glad to have me done with it.

i loved this book. i read it for a bookclub that i am in and i can't wait for the discussion. the writing, the themes, the characters... oh so good.

corn chowder

i just tried this recipe and both randy and i loved it. if you're interested, you should be able to click on the picture and it will be large enough for you to read. i served it with bread and it was delicious. perfect for soup season. i used 3 cups of the frozen organic sweet corn from costco and it worked great, with a lot less hassle.

haircut

about once a year i get fed up with my hair and chop it off. it's usually in november or december, but this year, it came a little early. i got my hair cut yesterday and i think i like it. it's one of those haircuts you have to get used to. i'm going to need some practice styling it as well. as in, instead of taking one minute to do my hair every day, i may up it to 3-5 minutes. but don't hold your breath.

madeleine is getting used to it too. when she saw me for the first time after the haircut yesterday, i went to pick her up and she started crying. throughout the day yesterday, she kept giving me this weird look as if to say, "you sound like my mommy, but you don't look like my mommy." today has been better, with less of those looks. we're all getting used to it.

peek-a-boo and the weed whacker man

madeleine loves playing peek-a-boo right now. she doesn't seem to care whether she actually goes from being hidden to being seen, so much as whether there is some kind of a change of scenery for her. in this picture, she was playing peek-a-boo by switching from above the seat to below the seat:

audrey's boys were over at our house yesterday, so i decided that i would try to get a picture of all three of the linford grandchildren. i got them all set up on my front steps (austin insisted on making the photo seasonal by including the pumpkin) and then tried to take a picture with all three of them looking at me. ha! unfortunately, i was competing for attention with a neighbor who was weed whacking. if only it could have been the neighbor directly across the street from us...

i tried switching positions so that he was kind of behind me, but it still didn't work too well.

rules

i just read the book, "rules," by cynthia lord. it was a fun, quick, and easy read - i read it in one day without completely neglecting all of my responsibilities. this was a juvenile lit book that my mom recommended i read. interestingly, it had a lot of the same themes as the last juvenile lit book i read. both books have main characters that have siblings with autism and deal with the difficulties that come along with being a child with a disabled sibling.

this was a touching book and was very well written. i felt like i got a lot out of the book as an adult and it made me think, which i hadn't really planned on. i think that it's good to read juvenile literature every once in a while so that we are transported back to those feelings of reading as a kid.

donut shop

it's 6:45 am and i am craving a chocolate bar. big time. problem is, provo doesn't have any donut shops. i'm not talking about a krispy kreme, with their overly sugared donuts. i'm talking about a mom and pop's donut shop. where they make their 6 year old get up at 3:30 in the morning to work dangerously close to large vats of hot oil and help with the family business.

unspectacular quirks

my friend, erin, asked me to post about a few of my unspectacular quirks that people may not know about. here goes...

i am obsessive about keeping a journal. i was going to try to tone down the word obsessive, but i think that it is probably appropriate in this case. i have a written account for every day of my life since i was 12 years old. dead serious. i used to write individual entries for each day, but now, i usually write weekly, while still accounting for the events of each day. my journals are probably terribly boring. almost certainly, actually. they are not a diary so much, but really are an account of my day to day activities. a travel log. it's not that they are emotionless, but for the most part, they are not terribly thrilling, either. but i have stopped caring what they may be like for other people to read because other people don't read them, and when they will, i will probably be dead and i won't care. the main reason that i do it is because it is therapeutic for me.

i am abnormally prone to wearing holes in the armpits of my shirts. i have no idea why, but that is probably the number one reason that i end up getting rid of shirts. maybe it is because i insist on doing 100 jumping jacks a day... okay, that was a joke. hopefully you already knew that.

one of my most prized possessions is my ti-83 calculator. the silly thing is, i rarely used it as a graphing calculator, even when i was pursuing my math degree. i don't know how to use approximately 75% of the functions on the calculator, but i prefer it over any other lesser calculator. i think it is because of the screen that allows me to see the steps i've taken. and the memories of mr. haldane's calculus class.

i love making lists. i undoubtedly get this from my mother. lists make me feel so much better in life because they quantify and bound the tasks that float about in my head and make me feel overwhelmed when they are so uncontained. i often make lists that never get looked at again, but made me feel better just to make them.

i have a thing for ticonderoga no. 2 pencils. mechanical pencils will not do. they squeak and scratch when they write and their erasers are insubstantial. but a ticonderoga... now there's a pencil you can depend on. and if you give me one that has just been sharpened to a pristine point in an electric pencil sharpener...

winter upon us

the weather has been cooling down significantly for the past couple weeks, but afternoons were still pretty warm and it just felt like a crisp fall. but last weekend, we went to boise and found winter there. and having returned to provo, it seems that winter has found provo as well.

on the drive up to boise, we had clear roads and clear skies until about half an hour outside of boise, when it started to snow pretty heavily. it's always hard when the last stretch of your long road trip takes longer than expected when you are already anxious to get there and be done with the drive.

the weekend was cold up in boise, and of course, i was underprepared. i always bring a coat when we go at christmas, but whenever we go in fall or spring, i think, "i won't need a coat," and it always ends up being record-breaking cold that weekend and randy always ends up giving up his coat for me when we go outside. this trip was no exception.

we got back sunday night, and although the roads were clear, the interstate was lined with new snow. utah had gotten snow too. because we got back late at night, it was dark and i didn't see the garden. but when i went out to check on it the next morning, i was shocked. i knew that because of the deep cold, gardening was pretty much over and it was time to dig things up, but i didn't expect to see this:

dead, dead, dead.

everything was wilted, and ugly.

winter is upon us.

quick trip to boise

we decided to go on a somewhat last-minute trip to boise last weekend. randy has to do 10 play-throughs of his recital for 10 different audiences before the actual recital, so we went up to boise and he got in 3 performances.

we were mostly there for the recitals, but we also managed to squeeze in a birthday celebration for randy and some time with cousins.

randy being a corn-ball while he blows out his candle.

madeleine and her great grandpa peck.

madeleine and her cousin lainey. they are only three months apart and madeleine loved having another baby around.

madeleine kept gently nudging lainey's head with her own as a little sign of affection. it was really sweet.

madeleine and lainey lining up to have calli read to them.

madeleine and matthew

audrey and her boys were over for a couple hours the other afternoon and i got some pictures of madeleine and matthew together (austin was sleeping).

this is my adorable nephew matthew. he seems to be a little wary of madeleine sometimes.

why is matthew wary of madeleine?

perhaps it is because she gets in his face and yells sometimes.

but mostly, i think it is because she tries to steal his toys and food.

we're working on appropriate sharing with madeleine, but she's not quite grasping the concepts yet.

happy birthday randy!

randy turns 25 today and boy am i glad he was born! what a great guy. he is such a perfect husband and i love him more than anyone else in the world. he is my favorite.

to celebrate, my parents took us out for sushi last night. it was delicious food and great company. who could ask for a better combination?

madeleine came along too. she didn't get any sushi, but she enjoyed the chopsticks and especially enjoyed the dessert, which we shared with her.

leftover pictures

these are some pictures that i have from the past couple weeks that you haven't seen yet. a few that i got from my mom's computer that were taken a little while ago, and some more recent ones...

too tired to stay awake.

i babysat a boy in our ward while his mom went to an appointment and madeleine loved having a friend to play with. she stole all of her toys back whenever he would pick one up, but he didn't seem to mind.

general conference

we just finished another wonderful general conference weekend up at my parent's house. sunday evening always comes too soon on these weekends and i can't believe that i'll have to wait another six months until the next general conference.

i really needed this weekend. i needed the time that i got with my family to just relax and spend some extra time with some of my favorite people. i needed the spiritual recharge. i needed the counsel and encouragement that i heard from our prophet and the twelve apostles, as well as other church leaders. there were wonderful messages of hope and comfort, as well as challenges to be better and to deepen my discipleship. most of all, i needed the reminder to refocus my thoughts on the savior more often and to remember his atonement in all aspects of my life.

on a less serious note, i needed to gain a few pounds eating ridiculously good food. all of our favorites were made and consumed and i don't regret eating anything.

madeleine had a great time this weekend as well. here were some of her favorite things from the weekend:

lots of time with cousins, austin and matthew, and following them everywhere they went.

enjoying the toys at grandma and pa'a's house, especially the blocks.

a little extra time with daddy.

plenty of attention from aunts and uncles.

and just hanging out.

madeleine figures out clapping

randy and i have both been trying to teach madeleine to clap for months now and she has basically let us know that she will clap when she feels like it. today, madeleine finally felt like clapping on her own. she's actually done a few random claps here and there before, but never consistent clapping. but today, i had billy joel on while i was making dinner and madeleine started clapping. it kind of reminded me of the movie, "the jerk," with steve martin, where he has no rhythm until he started listening to hokey music on the radio and was suddenly able to clap along. maybe all of that classical music just hasn't made madeleine feel like clapping.

the more likely explanation is that madeleine picked up clapping from a little boy in our ward that i was watching this morning while his mom went to an appointment. he was clapping a bunch and every time he did it, madeleine would just stare at him. who knows, maybe it had nothing to do with that. regardless, madeleine is now clapping and of course, i video taped it.

forgive the first video where i forgot that it was turned on its side for a few seconds. this is what reminded me of steve martin.

and here is another short clip of it up close:

baby shower

only one half of one of my legs is shaved.

madeleine's morning nap has been getting shorter and shorter, so unless i really hustle, i don't usually have time to exercise and shower during it. she generally wakes up right as i am trying to sneak into the bathroom (inconveniently located right next to her bedroom).

so, lately i have been baby proofing the bathroom (taking the toilet paper off of the roll and putting it on a high shelf and putting the trash can, plunger, and toilet scrubber out of reach), putting a few toys on the floor (this also means that i've been cleaning my bathroom floor a lot more often), and letting madeleine play in there while i take a quick shower, peeking out every minute or so to check on her. it's not the best way to shower, but it's been working (someone please tell me that i will someday regain some portion of my personal privacy).

well, this morning, i was in the middle of shaving my legs and noticed that i had a little visitor peeking into the shower with me. this was more difficult for madeleine to accomplish than you might initially think. because of how our (lousy) bathroom is situated, we have to have two shower curtains to prevent a flood every time we shower. they overlap considerably, and instead of going to one of the far edges of the curtains to peek in, madeleine had somehow parted the two curtains in the middle where they overlap and was hanging over the edge of the tub, getting wet. i wish i could have gotten a picture of this, but you realize the difficulties that such a picture would present.

i tried to set madeleine down on the floor again with her toys so that i could finish shaving, but she wouldn't have it. so instead, i called it quits, threw on a towel, and ran to get the camera. i caught her before she had entirely untangled herself from the curtains.
